Get into Teaching

Are you someone with industry or subject knowledge looking to pursue teaching as a career?

Did you know that if you’re not a qualified teacher, we can offer you training alongside your teaching career?

Maybe you’re a recent graduate, trades worker, simply looking for a change in career or someone looking for a part time role to compliment your existing work.

A career of teaching in Further Education is rewarding, impactful and offers unique opportunities and benefits.

Teacher Development Programme

With or without prior teaching experience, you will be supported by our internal Teacher Academy through the Teacher Development Programme.

Through this programme you will gain all the skills that are needed to become a confident and effective teacher. We’ll consider and utilise your existing knowledge, professional experience and key competencies.

In addition to providing you with the necessary theoretical and best practice knowledge, you will be assigned a mentor from our high performance teaching team to provide you with peer support through your early career with us.

The initial stage of the programme takes the form of an Induction to introduce you to the East Kent Colleges Group professional standards and expectations. Once in your role you will receive developmental support including guidance with designing lesson outcomes, setting SMART targets, teaching, learning and assessment strategies and techniques for behaviour management. As the programme moves on you will receive ongoing supportive guidance on your performance. Your teaching will be observed, and you will have meetings with your line manager or assigned mentor.

If you do not possess a teacher training qualification, we will support you to achieve the Introduction to Teaching Programme (ITP) to provide a structured foundation teacher training experience to support and develop colleagues in their new roles. You’ll then go on to complete a Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher (LST) Apprenticeship.

We can also support you with both the Level 3 Award suite of TAQA Assessor and Verifier programmes if this is a requirement for your role.

Entry Requirements

We look for the highest quality candidates to teach our students, but you don’t need to hold a teaching qualification to get into teaching with us. We are looking for candidates to have or be willing to work towards:

  • A Level 2 qualification or above in both English and Mathematics. In some cases, we can support you with these qualifications before you start your teaching qualifications.
  • A Level 3 qualification in a vocational subject area, or a higher-level specialist qualification depending on your chosen field of teaching.
