What was your route into working within Education? Have you always wanted to work within Education?

My route into working within education came quite naturally through my passion for hospitality and my desire to support others in developing their skills. While I didn’t initially set out to work in education, over time I found myself drawn to the training and development side of my roles; mentoring team members, sharing knowledge, and helping others progress in their careers.

As I advanced within EKC Group, I began to see the impact that education and hands-on learning can have within the hospitality industry. That’s when I realised how rewarding it is to be part of an organisation that combines industry experience with educational growth. It’s become a path I’m really passionate about, and I feel proud to contribute to shaping the future of others entering the sector.

How/why did you originally apply to work with EKC Group?

I originally applied to work EKC Group after completing a Hospitality course, as I was eager to begin my career in the industry. When I saw that the hotel was recruiting for a Food and Beverage Team Member, I jumped at the opportunity. It felt like the perfect starting point to apply what I had learned and gain hands-on experience. I’m so glad I took that chance, I’ve never looked back since!

Have you had any other roles within the organisation?

Yes, I have progressed through several roles within the EKC Group, each contributing significantly to my development in the hospitality industry. I began my journey as a Food and Beverage Team Member, a position I held for 2 years. During this time, I developed a strong foundation in customer service and operational procedures, which led to my internal promotion to Food and Beverage Team Leader. I was then fortunate to be promoted to Assistant Food and Beverage Manager. This position allowed me to further expand my leadership capabilities and deepen my understanding of team management and service excellence. I held this role before progressing to my current position as Hotel Operations Manager in December 2019.

Each step in my career has been a valuable opportunity for growth, enabling me to gain well-rounded experience across all aspects of hospitality. As Hotel Operations Manager, I now have full oversight of the hotel, hospitality, catering, events and weddings, making it the perfect role for me to apply everything I've learned and continue to grow within the industry.

Have you completed any training to help you complete your role(s)?

Yes, over the years I’ve completed a variety of training courses that have been incredibly beneficial to my development and success in each role. These include Line Manager Training, Personal Licensing Training (DPS), Food Safety and Hygiene Training, and First Aid Training. Each course has helped me to build the skills and confidence needed to lead effectively, ensure compliance, and maintain high standards across all areas of hospitality. I’ve found all of the training to be both engaging and practical, and it’s played a key role in supporting my progression within the organisation.

What do you enjoy most about working within the Group / your Business Unit?

What I enjoy most about working within EKC Group and my business unit is the strong focus on growth and development. There are so many opportunities to learn, progress, and expand your skills and the support behind that development is genuine. I love being part of a team where everyone works together to achieve success, and I truly feel valued, supported, and appreciated by both my line manager and colleagues.

The working environment is positive and collaborative, and the benefits provided by EKC Group are a huge bonus! They really show how much the organisation cares for its staff. It’s a fantastic place to work and grow.

Do you have any career highlights or stand out moments from your time with the Group?

Absolutely, there have been several highlights throughout my time with EKC Group. One of the biggest stand-out moments for me was being promoted to Hotel Operations Manager. It was a proud achievement that reflected the hard work and dedication I had put into my previous roles, and it felt incredibly rewarding to be recognised and trusted with such a responsibility.

Another highlight has been seeing the growth and development of the team, including our students, around me. Supporting colleagues and students through their own progression and being part of their journey has been just as fulfilling as my own career milestones.

What do you think are some of the most important qualities needed for your role?

I believe some of the most important qualities needed for my role include patience, determination, eagerness, motivation, and strong industry knowledge.

What would you say to anyone else considering applying for the Group?

Have you always wanted to work in hospitality?

It was something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m a big people person so I knew I wanted to help customers and develop myself. I studied Level 2 and 3 Hospitality at EKC Broadstairs College and got to work in The Yarrow during my placement, which I enjoyed. I got offered bank work during my Level 3 hospitality course, and I’ve kept progressing.

Why did you originally apply to work with EKC Group?

I was familiar with working here from my work placement. I knew the staff and they knew I worked well with customers and behind the bar, so I called and applied to work on the website.

Have you had any other roles within the organisation?

I started working at The Yarrow in front of house staff and have now I’ve progressed to a Head Waiter.

What do you enjoy most about working within the Group?

As I was a student here, I can relate when students come to The Yarrow, as I’ve been where they are now.

Do you have any career highlights or stand out moments from your time with the Group?

The highlight from my time here is the promotion. I thought starting at 16 it wasn’t going to be serious, but I love working here and being trusted as a Head Waiter was a big highlight for me. To step up and take responsibility as well as being trusted in this role.

What do you think are some of the most important qualities needed for your role?

I’d say the important qualities for my role would be discipline, people skills, initiative and thinking on the spot as well as good team leader skills.

What would you say to anyone else considering applying for the Group?

I’d say to definitely do it if you aren’t sure, it will help you so much in the future as it did with me. It has completely changed my mindset from not taking work seriously to loving working here. It's really helped me grow and I’ve changed as a person.
